We've had our science-based target approved

At Hartmann, we're thrilled to announce a monumental stride in our commitment to environmental stewardship. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially endorsed our crucial targets for slashing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This validation by SBTi confirms that our goals align with a trajectory aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

This milestone marks a momentous achievement for Hartmann, but it also signals a profound dedication from both our organisation and our partners. The road to achieving substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions has been paved with persistent groundwork and proactive measures.

Urgency and persistence in climate action

Over the past years, our relentless pursuit of identifying opportunities for efficiency has been a cornerstone of our journey. We've tirelessly sought solutions and implemented them throughout our production processes, laying the foundation for a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

The urgency of the climate crisis necessitates swift and decisive action. By aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative in 2022, Hartmann reaffirms its commitment to upholding the latest scientific benchmarks in climate action. This isn’t a quick sprint; it's a marathon towards sustainable practices and a greener future.

The path to achieving climate action targets

Our manufacturing process, particularly the drying phase after wet-moulding, stands as a primary source of CO2e emissions. We continuously evaluate our plants and production lines to swiftly identify areas for energy and CO2e reduction. Investing in more energy-efficient equipment, such as drying ovens and vacuum pumps, is a pivotal step based on our insights.

Recent initiatives, such as installing an industrial boiler and comprehensive upgrades to drying ovens, signify our proactive approach to reducing our environmental impact. Additionally, pilot projects in solar energy and the enhancement of our factories' processes underline our commitment to sustainability.

Forging ahead: Innovation and collaboration

While we've made significant strides in efficiency and consumption, we recognise the need for further technological advancements to achieve our ambitious carbon emission reduction goals. Hence, our establishment of a new competency centre in Denmark signifies our commitment to exploring and developing energy projects crucial to realising our SBTi commitments.

Moreover, our dedication extends beyond our production processes. Collaborating with suppliers and partners worldwide, we're enhancing processes for a more sustainable and responsible value chain.

About Science Based Targets

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emission reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.

The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses companies’ targets.
